Bedard '11 to Lead Top-10 Science and Technology Journal

As the incoming editor in chief of the Albany Law Journal of Science and Technology, Caitlin Bedard '11 has a keen interest in how advances in science and technology impact the legal field.

She will oversee the 20 ^th year of the publication, which was ranked seventh out of 63 journals in the science, technology and computing category, as well as 10 ^th out of 76 journals in the intellectual property law category.

The journal, she explained, "has the freedom to cover a wide range of emerging issues due to the broadness of its scope. Science and technology are ubiquitous factors in all aspects of today's society."

Recent topics that the Albany Law Journal of Science and Technology has covered include Wikipedia, assisted reproductive technologies and online personal health records.

Bedard sees the opportunity for further improvement. "We have a great class, and a great opportunity to enhance the journal's reputation as a resource for the legal community."

A Massachusetts native and Syracuse University graduate, Bedard always planned to attend law school. After earning her undergraduate degree in political science, she moved to Albany to work for Assemblyman Al Stirpe (D-North Syracuse) until coming to Albany Law.

Now in her second year, she works as a law clerk in the Albany office of Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker LLP, a full-service firm with more than 20 offices and clients in the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia. The international firm's disparate practice areas afford Bedard the opportunity "to gain insight into many different areas of law," she said.

Ultimately, Bedard plans to practice corporate law upon graduation and anticipates that her experience in politics and government affairs, as well as her time spent navigating cutting-edge legal theories at the helm of the Albany Law Journal of Science and Technology, will help her along this career path.

Staying true to her hometown roots, however, Bedard did joke that, "If the New England Patriots ever call and need a general counsel, I'll be there."
