Women's Leadership Initiative
Albany Law School has a storied history of supporting women in the law. Kate Stoneman, Class of 1898, was the first woman admitted to practice law in New York State and paved the way for the thousands to follow.
The Women’s Leadership Initiative at Albany Law School is dedicated to normalizing female success and continuing that legacy through the development and advancement of Albany Law School students, alumnae, and members of the broader community.
About the Women's Leadership Initiative (WLI)
Established in 2020 by Kimberly Petillo-Décossard, Esq. ’05, the Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) at Albany Law School celebrates the accomplishments of Albany Law School alumnae and champions women’s achievement in the legal profession. Grounded in a commitment to professional growth, opportunity, and belonging, the WLI equips members of our community to succeed as leaders and change-makers.
Our mission, composed by WLI fellowship alumnae, is to empower women to advance their legal careers in leadership roles by engaging in skill-building programs, leveraging professional relationships, and broadening opportunities to meet their full potential.
Built on three strategic pillars, the WLI provides transformative experiences for students, alumni, faculty, and staff—drawing on the expertise of executive coaches, Fortune 500 leaders, and influential voices across the legal profession and beyond:
Community Engagement
Rich with programming accessible to the entire Albany Law community, our events—such as workshops, speaker series, and networking gatherings—build connections across experience levels and practice areas. These gatherings celebrate achievement, foster dialogue, and strengthen bonds among legal professionals.
Continuing Education Courses
Our educational offerings are designed for practicing attorneys and legal professionals seeking growth in leadership, professional skills, and career development. These courses are practical, timely, and aligned with evolving industry expectations and practitioner needs.
Fellowship Program
The WLI Fellowship is a three year long leadership development experience open to highly motivated Albany Law students. Fellows receive mentorship, participate in advanced workshops, and direct high-impact projects that align with the Initiative’s mission. The program builds confidence, expands professional networks, and deepens commitment to leadership excellence.
