Living and Learning in Albany

Content-0

Albany, the capital of New York state, is the hub of the Capital Region, which includes nearby cities of Troy, Schenectady and Saratoga Springs, creating the fourth largest urban area in New York. The area is rich in history, government and culture. Along with a vibrant scene for concerts, restaurants, and shopping, it is centrally located for easy access to New York City, Boston and Montreal.

Whether you like city, suburb or rural, Albany accommodates any lifestyle. Theater, sports, museums, outdoor activities — the region offers something for everyone.

Campus
Albany Law School shares a 54-acre midtown campus with three other educational institutions and research facilities. Walkways and green spaces connect the school with The Sage Colleges, Albany Medical College and Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.  Together, the schools attract students from across the country and around the world whose diverse interests and backgrounds enrich the intellectual and social environment for all. Campus amenities include a fitness center, athletic fields, gymnasiums, an art gallery and bookstore.

This eclectic area, marked by historic brownstones and cobblestone intersections, is where you will find cafes, nightclubs, ethnic restaurants, art galleries and one-of-a-kind shops. Lark Street is the backdrop for many events throughout the year, including Art on Lark and LarkFest.

Empire State Plaza
The Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza's distinct architecture carves Albany's skyline. Here you will find The Egg Performing Arts Center, the New York State Museum, the Justice Building and more. The Concourse, commonly referred to as Albany's "Underground City," connects all buildings in the Plaza and features food courts, retail shops and various works of art and sculpture.

Shopping
While Albany is known for its specialty shops, malls and shopping plazas such as Crossgates and Colonie Center dot the map along the major highways. Grocery stores, farmers' markets and gourmet emporiums are abundant. Stuyvesant Plaza offers an assortment of mainstream retailers and one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. Outlet shopping in Lee, Mass., and Manchester, Vt., is just a short drive away.

Art, Culture & Recreation
Museums, galleries and performing arts centers bring a wide range of events to the Capital Region. The Times Union Center hosts large concerts and sporting events in the heart of downtown Albany. The acclaimed Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), in addition to national rock concerts, hosts the Lake George Opera, the New York City Ballet, the Philadelphia Orchestra,  a national two-day jazz festival and various lifestyle festivals.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Albany serves as a gateway to metro areas such as New York City, Boston, Montreal and Philadelphia, as well as resort and ski areas in the nearby Catskill, Adirondack and Berkshire mountains. Albany and its surrounding counties, each with their own charm and flavor, are considered to be some of the most beautiful settings in New York state. Both the Amtrak train station and Albany International Airport are just a 10-minute drive from the law school.
