NYSBA Fellowship Allows Federico '16 to Clerk for NYC Justice

Anna Federico '16 will spend her summer in Manhattan clerking for Justice Marcy Friedman of the New York Supreme Court’s Commercial Division, thanks to the New York State Bar Association Commercial and Federal Litigation Section’s Minority 1L Fellowship.

Federico was the unanimous first choice of the committee considering candidates for the fellowship, which is meant to provide a meaningful opportunity for professional development to a promising minority 1L student, as well as to diversify the pipeline of burgeoning commercial litigators.

She accepted the fellowship last month in front of 300 people during an awards program at the Lincoln Center. Her family and Dean Alicia Ouellette joined her at the event.

“Working in Justice Friedman’s chambers will be a wonderful opportunity for me,” said Federico, a native of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., who earned her undergraduate degree in English from the University at Albany before enrolling in law school. “I’m excited to learn more about commercial law, and I can’t imagine a better place to do so than New York City.”

Federico is also interested in family and criminal law, and when she returns to Albany for the fall semester, she will work in the Family Violence Litigation Clinic and Immigration Project, which will give her the opportunity to argue cases in court on behalf of people who have suffered violence at the hands of intimate partners or family members, including immigrant victims.
