As an intern at the Albany County Conflict Defender's Office, Donielle K. Maier '15 spent a year meeting with clients and advocating for them through the criminal justice system, including making court appearances under the authority of a practice order. During the past summer, she worked under the Dean’s National Summer Fellowship at the Broome County Public Defender's Office, gaining further experience in the courtroom.

“I have gained invaluable courtroom experience in busy court systems,” Maier said. “I really enjoy the work, helping clients understand their options, developing a case and then presenting that case to a judge. I feel like I have already found my voice in court.”

Maier, who is president of the Criminal Law Society, intends to pursue a career in trial work.

“Whether it is criminal or civil litigation, I really want to become an expert at trial work," she said. "I have been very fortunate to meet and learn from experienced professors and notable trial attorneys. I am excited to continue to learn and develop these skills after I graduate.”
