Ben Lee '11 was recently elected president of the law school's student Health Law Society, adding to an already extensive list of outside-of-class activities that includes working in the Health Law Clinic, editing articles for the Albany Law Review and interning with the law firm of Board of Trustees Chair E. Stewart Jones, Jr.

Lee will serve as president of the Health Law Society for the 2010-2011 school year. He intends to "build on the significant momentum generated by this year's activities," including more community outreach, especially within the medical profession. He also hopes that the Health Law Society will organize and host its second Health Law Week after launching the initiative in fall 2009.

After spending two summers working at the Queensbury, N.Y., firm Borgos & Del Signore, P.C., during college, followed by nearly two years at the Boston headquarters of Ropes & Gray LLP after graduating, Lee identified health law as his preferred field.

"By working at two different firms, in two different locations, I was able to experience a wide variety of legal niches," he said. "Health law is extremely versatile, and it overlaps with many other areas."

He also expressed enthusiasm about beginning a career in health law at a time of significant transition for the field. "I'd like to contribute to changing the field, and the system, for the better," he said.

The Health Law Society, which is comprised of approximately 20 active students, promotes awareness about contemporary issues regarding health law, health care policy and bioethics by organizing panel discussions, seminars, debates and networking events with experts in various facets of health law. The society also maintains relationships with Albany Medical College (AMC) and Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, as well as the faculty at AMC's Alden March Bioethics Institute.

A Queensbury, N.Y., native and St. Lawrence University graduate, Lee lives with his wife in Albany.
