Joint Degree Positions Butehorn '14 at Intersection of Law, Entrepreneurship and Emerging Technology

Malcom Butehorn '14 recently completed his MBA at Union Graduate College through the joint degree program and is on track to graduate with his law degree this spring with his class.

“I was attracted to the joint degree program because it gives me more access the emerging high-tech industries throughout the region,” said Butehorn. “As one of the students taking the inaugural hybrid class with SUNY’s College of Nanoscale Science, I get to learn about the intersection of law, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies.”

Butehorn has written research memos related to his studies for the Government Law Center and is currently writing two research papers on economic development and securities regulation. For the past year, he has also interned at the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU), helping to coordinate the Student Aid Alliance Advocacy Day, which brings together hundreds of college students from across the state to Albany to show support for student aid funding and higher education. He most recently began legislative and policy research work on higher education for CICU. 

While at Union Graduate, Butehorn worked as a business consultant on a four-member team for his capstone project. Reporting to the mayor of Schenectady, he was responsible for business research analysis of the city’s homeownership program that resulted in an executable business plan with a presentation to the mayor, his staff and the Schenectady City Council.

“Being at Albany Law School and taking advantage of all that it has to offer puts me in a position to cultivate a great professional network, engage with faculty mentors and have doors opened for a number of exciting post-graduate employment possibilities,’ said Butehorn.

Originally from Farmingdale, N.Y., Butehorn attended Boston University, where he graduated with a BA in political science and thereafter lived in multiple cities working for non-profits, corporate luxury retail and an internet service company before returning to graduate school.

“It's the professional experience I’ve gained over the years, coupled with the critical thinking and process improvement skills I have learned at both schools that has really set me up for success in the new economy developing in N.Y., especially throughout the Capitol Region,” he said.
