As president of the Rochester City Council, Lovely Warren ‘03 will have a critical role in appointing the next mayor of her city. Current Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy was elected lieutenant governor of New York state, and he will leave city office at the end of the year, before the conclusion of his term.

Warren, who was recently elected president of the city council, also serves as chief of staff for New York State Assemblyman David Gantt.

Warren first joined Assemblyman Gantt as a legislative assistant while still in law school in 2000. She was appointed to fill a vacant seat in the city council in May 2007, only four years after graduating from Albany Law, and was quickly elected to serve a full four-year term in November 2007.

Since joining the city council, Warren launched the North East Times, a community newsletter designed to inform residents about city initiatives, legislation and community events. For her many accomplishments at a relatively young age, the Rochester Business Journal recently named her one of the city's Forty under 40 young professionals.

Warren noted that she was born in Rochester, and always knew that she would move back after law school. While at Albany Law, she also served as a summer law clerk to then New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and as a summer judicial clerk to the Honorable Teresa Johnson, Presiding Judge of the Rochester City Court.

Last month, Warren joined 25 Albany Law alumnae to discuss law practice, career success and work culture at a luncheon in Rochester. Key themes that emerged from the ensuing discussion included balancing passion for career and family; a commitment to the profession and to mentoring young attorneys; and a desire to broaden the definition of success beyond its traditional scope.

Warren and her husband, who she met in Rochester prior to attending Albany Law, have a four-month-old daughter, Taylor, and they know well the challenge of balancing family, work and community service.
