Milbrand '94 Joins Hiscock & Barclay

A firm believer in the notion that treating others well pays off, James Milbrand '94 has applied this philosophy to develop strong business and career opportunities. Most recently, he joined Hiscock & Barclay, LLP, as a commercial litigation partner in the firm's Buffalo, N.Y., office.

Milbrand concentrates his practice in the areas of state and federal, commercial, mass tort and health care litigation, including extensive experience involving both civil and criminal investigations and trials. He has acted for clients in disputes with federal and state enforcement agencies and has defended both individuals and businesses against allegations of fraud relating to health care, tax, false claims, environmental compliance and professional discipline.

Over the years, Milbrand has made sure to treat all of his colleagues well, even if they are sitting on the other side of the courtroom. As a result, he has frequently been able to cultivate new business through his ever-expanding network.

Before joining Hiscock & Barclay, a 200-attorney law firm with offices throughout the major cities of New York state, as well as in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Toronto, Milbrand was a partner with Hodgson Russ, LLP. He also worked as an associate at Phillips Lytle, LLP, and he began his career as an associate at the Law Office of Alan D. Goldstein, Esq., where he tried dozens of cases in his first five years as an attorney. Notably, Milbrand recalled turning 29 while being in the middle of his first homicide trial, offering an insanity defense on the well-covered patricide case.

A Buffalo native, Milbrand attended Alleghany College, where he played football, before enrolling in law school. On his first day at Albany Law, he recalled, he was called on in two classes, by both Professor Jack Welsh and Professor Dale Moore. He said that they later laughed about the incident and chalked it up to coincidence - and the fact that his last name is in the middle of the alphabet and relatively easy to pronounce.

Since graduating law school, Milbrand has stayed in touch with many classmates and members of the faculty, including Professor Michael Hutter, who he has turned to for evidence advice during trials.

Milbrand is on the board of directors for the Amherst Police Foundation and the Legal Services for the Elderly and Disabled, and he also serves as vice president of the Police Athletic League of Buffalo. He and his wife, who co-owns Cobblestone, a restaurant near HSBC Arena in Buffalo, have two sons, James, six, and Aidan, three.
