This one-credit graduate-level course provides an overview of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), which was passed by Congress in 1986 to ensure that anyone presenting to an emergency department be stabilized and treated, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. This course will explore the legal and regulatory framework of the statute, associated case law, practical considerations for certain patient populations, and practical implications for professionals in the health law arena.
