This graduate level course provides a broad understanding of medical malpractice from the basics of how a physician-patient relationship is created and terminated to what it takes to prove or disprove that a medical provider was negligent. Additional topics include the main types of claims that may be asserted against a medical provider (such as informed consent), Good Samaritan laws, statute of limitations issues, and practical tips that may strengthen future claims and defenses. This course will delve into these topics from multiple perspectives including that of a patient, individual doctor, institutional health care provider, litigator, and compliance officer.
