Explores in depth the legal issues and discrete phenomena of intimate partner violence (IPV), violence against women concerns, sexual assault, dating violence, and domestic violence. Criminal prosecution of abusers/"batterers", use of civil orders of protection and contempt of court, child abuse and neglect charges related to IPV, sexual assault, stalking, intersectional complexities including LGBTQIA, race, poverty, culture, and language, implicit and explicit bias and the basis for intervention of the state are the most common topics of discussions and assigned readings. Learning is assessed generally through student progress on and completion of the course paper, timely interim written submissions, class participation and an oral presentation.
