Data privacy is a fast-developing field, relevant to public and private sector entities. This graduate-level course provides students with an overview of the legal and regulatory framework governing data privacy and protection in the federal government and explores the nexus between that framework and state-level and international rules and requirements. This course will provide an examination of: U.S. Privacy laws such as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) and Regulation P, California's data privacy framework, SEC guidance and rulemaking, the New York Cyber Regulation for financial institutions, the EU General Data Protection Regulation, and other recent developments. It will also cover the related compliance obligations of financial institutions as it relates to data privacy law.
