The course will entail an intensive study of New York's highest court, the Court of Appeals. Specifically, the course will examine the Court's role in law and governance, the Judges, their selection, and the Court's decision-making process. Students will read briefs of pending cases, prepare bench briefs, attend oral arguments, and draft decisions. Students will also study the Court itself through the literature on the history of the Court, its Judges, its notable decisions, and current developments. In the classroom: instruction, discussion, and written and oral advocacy based on cases before the Court. At the Court: one class each month at oral arguments; meetings with Judges and professional staff as arranged.
