General Information

Rather than writing in conventional blue books, Albany Law School offers students the opportunity to use their personal laptop to type selected final exams using software provided by Examsoft.

Each student's information will be automatically sent to Examsoft if you have any exam classes that allow Examsoft. Each Fall, you'll need to download the latest version of the software from the ExamSoft website, www.examsoft.com/albanylaw and then register it. In the Spring and Summer semesters, if you DID NOT use Examsoft the previous semester OR if you are using it on a different laptop than the one you used the previous semester, you'll need to download and register the software.

(SofTest has been updated and needs to be reinstalled for the Fall 2015 semester.)

In some cases, certain antivirus applications may block SofTest from starting properly or can affect SofTest's performance during an exam. If your computer is running any of the programs listed below disable them before installing SofTest and re-enable them after installation is complete. Before taking any secure exam, disable the antivirus software before taking the exam and re-enable it after exiting your exam. For instructions on how to disable your antivirus/antispyware application, click on the product's name below.

If your antivirus software is not listed above, please see your software's help for instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does the ExamSoft software do to my laptop?

A: This software simply blocks access to all Windows applications and provides a simplified word processor for essay responses. It also blocks access to the Internet and any instant messengers. As a proprietary word processor, you can only work on the exam once it begins and cannot regain access to any files or applications until you exit the exam.

Q: Must I provide my own laptop?

A: Yes, students must provide their own laptop.

Q: How do I get started?

A: All students are automatically eligible to use Examsoft to take their exams. Information regarding downloading and registering the software will be e-mailed to all students.

Q: What if after I install SofTest, I decide to use a different laptop?

A: You are able to download and register the software as many times as needed. However, you can only download your exam files ONCE. If you need to re-download your exam files, please see someone in ITS.

Q: If I use my laptop, will I be taking the exam in the same room as those using blue books?

A: Yes, we do not separate hand-writers from laptop users.

Q: Is it difficult, technically, to download the ExamSoft software?

A: No. Technical installation assistance is available directly from ExamSoft and Albany Law's Information Technology Services staff will be on-hand to assist if needed.

Q: What if I already used ExamSoft last semester?

A: You need to download and register the latest version of SofTest each Fall.

Q: What if my battery fails during the exam?

A: The rooms provided will be equipped with electrical outlets. Laptop users will be required to plug their computers into these outlets so as not to rely solely on battery power.

Q: What if my computer locks up during an exam and I can't get back in to complete the exam?

A: If rebooting does not correct the problem, you must hand-write the remainder of your exam. Your work is safely stored on your computer's hard drive and will be retrieved after your exam is finished.

Q: How do I create a backup if my laptop does not have a floppy drive?

A: We are not creating backups to any form of removable media-you will just upload your exam upon completion. In the rare event of a problem with your exam, we can retrieve a back-up copy from your laptop's hard drive.

Q: Is spell check available?

A: For closed book exams, spell check is not available. For open book exams, spell check will be available.

Q: If you start to answer a question, can you move on to the next question and come back later?

A: Yes, you can go forward and backward through questions throughout the exam.

Q: Are we supposed to print out our completed exam when we are finished?

A: No. Through your Internet connection, you will upload your completed exam to a server. We will then collect all of the exams, print them and deliver them to the faculty.
