Albany Law School has been recognized as a leader in health law and family law in the latest issue of preLaw magazine.

The magazine compiled an honor roll of law schools leading in health law. Albany Law earned an A- in health law for the fourth year in a row.

J.D. students can gain field experience with real clients in the Health Law Clinic, through a Field Placement, and the Semester-In-Practice Programs, all through the Edward P. Swyer Justice Center.

Students can also earn degrees simultaneously through the Dual J.D./M.S. in Bioethics program in conjunction with the Alden March Bioethics Institute at Albany Medical College.

Beyond the extensive J.D. options, Albany Law School also offers a series of cutting-edge Online Programs. These programs provide working professionals with or without any legal background the opportunity to advance their careers with an LL.M. or Master's degree or an Advance Certificate in a variety of specialty fields, including through a fully online Health Law and Healthcare Compliance Program.

Magazine editors noted, “Health law attorneys may work in hospitals, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, law firms or corporate settings. They might advise on compliance, represent patients or providers in disputes or help shape health care policy.”

The magazine also compiled an honor roll of top family law schools. Magazine editors gave Albany Law an A- ranking for family law, noting that “family law encompasses a variety of issues, from domestic violence and child abuse to divorce and homelessness.”

Students at Albany Law have numerous opportunities to advocate for families and children and learn strong negotiating and client counseling techniques. These range from courses in family law to working with clients in the Edward P. Swyer Justice Center, particularly with the Domestic Violence Prosecution Hybrid Clinic and the Family Violence Litigation Clinic.

Students can also hone their litigation skills through the Anthony V. Cardona ’70 Moot Court program through numerous competitions, such as the Gabrielli National Family Law Competition.

“It is one of the most important legal specialties, considering who’s often involved: children. Family law attorneys not only need strong legal skills but also the ability to work with clients facing emotional and high-stakes situations,” preLaw editors wrote.
