New GLC Explainer Breaks Down Prop 1, to Be Decided by Voters This Election Day
New Yorkers will be asked at the 2024 elections to vote on whether to approve Proposition 1, which is a proposed amendment to the State Constitution’s current equal protection provision.
The Government Law Center at Albany Law School examines the ballot proposal in its latest explainer, New York Equal Rights Amendment (Proposition 1) on the November 2024 Ballot . Author and GLC Legal Director Richard Rifkin provides a non-partisan and concise explanation of Proposition 1, the practical implications of the proposal, and ongoing debates among New Yorkers.
Voters should make sure that they turn over their ballots after selecting the candidates and electors of their choice to cast their vote concerning Proposition 1.
“New Yorkers will be asked at the 2024 elections to vote on whether to approve Proposition 1, which is a proposed amendment to the State Constitution’s current equal protection provision. This proposal, known as the Equal Rights Amendment (or the ERA), would add to the categories of those who are currently afforded constitutional protections from discrimination,” Rifkin writes.
Richard Rifkin currently serves as the Legal Director at the Government Law Center. Rifkin joined the Government Law Center in 2020, after a 40-year career in New York State government.
The Government Law Center conducts nonpartisan legal research and analysis to help state and local governments serve their communities. The explainer is the latest in our ongoing series of explainers, concisely mapping out the law that applies to important questions of public policy. The GLC has produced explainers on a variety of topics, including state constitutional amendments, voting rights, government ethics reform, political redistricting in New York, aging, and disability, among others.
The GLC has also launched the Improving Interbranch Communication Project to bridge gaps between New York’s Courts and the state's Executive and Legislative branches. More about that is here.
