Professor Sheldon Halpern recently returned to the United Kingdom to deliver the Herchel Smith Lecture at Queen Mary University, London, Law School, and the Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute, speaking on "An Uneasy Fit: Adapting the US Model of the Right of Publicity to UK and EU Jurisprudence." He also spoke on trademark issues of "use" and "ad-words" at University College London.

Late last year, Professor Halpern was also in the United Kingdom to give a lecture on U.S. defamation law and U.K. defamation law reform to the law school community at Queen Mary University , as well as a lecture on the U.S. copyright construct of "fair use," as compared to the UK "fair dealing" doctrine, to the law school community at Edinburgh University.

Professor Halpern joined Albany Law School in the fall of 2005 as the The Honorable Harold R. Tyler Jr. Chair in Law & Technology. In 2007, he was appointed Visiting Fellow at the Department of Law of the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. Now back on campus at Albany Law, he teaches Copyright Law, the Law of Defamation and Privacy and Trademark Law.

Professor Halpern has authored several books and publications and directed a series of interdisciplinary conferences exploring the impact of technology on law. He was a professor at The Ohio State University starting in 1984 and was named the C. William O'Neill Professor of Law and Judicial Administration at the institution in 2001.

Before joining academia, Professor Halpern practiced law in New York and Minnesota. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and graduated first in his class at Cornell Law School.
