Prof. Heverly Speaks Widely on Law and Technology

With research and teaching interests spanning property and land use law, intellectual property and copyright law, and cyberspace and communications law, Professor Robert Heverly has been active at academic conferences and other events across the country over the past several months.

Thus far this year, Professor Heverly:

  • Participated in "Cyber Security for Smart Grids: Building a Successful Business Plan and Model," sponsored by the Tech Valley Energy Forum, where he spoke on the topic of " Cyber Law for the Smart Grid" on April 21
  • Spoke about net neutrality at the Albany Law School Justice Robert H. Jackson Symposium, "Information with(out) Borders: The Intersection of International Law and Technology," on April 13
  • Presented the paper " Breaking the Internet - International Efforts to Play the Middle Against the Ends: A Way Forward" at a luncheon sponsored by the Syracuse Law School's Communications Law Program on April 4
  • Participated in the 2011 Intellectual Property Scholars Roundtable at Drake University Law School's Drake Intellectual Property Center in Des Moines, Iowa, on April 1 and 2
  • Participated in the Georgetown Journal of International Law's symposium " International Cyberlaw: Issues and Challenges" on March 21
  • Participated in the Internet Law Work-in-Progress Series at Santa Clara Law's High Tech Law Institute in Santa Clara, Calif., on March 5

Professor Heverly recently discussed cyber-bullying as a guest on NBC-affiliate WNYT's Forum 13 interview program, and he was again interviewed by that station for an evening news segment on the impact of social media in the courtroom.

On June 14, Professor Heverly will discuss his research on trends in copyright litigation as part of Albany Law School's New York City IP Alumni Luncheon, held at Fish & Richardson at 601 Lexington Ave. from noon to 1:30 p.m. On Sept. 15, he will deliver a similar presentation at the Capital Region IP Alumni Luncheon held at Albany Law School from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Professor Heverly also has a full slate of upcoming presentations and papers to be published, including:

  • Presenting a working paper, " The Trusted Technology Fallacy," at the 14 th Annual New York State Cyber Security Conference and 6 th Annual Academic Symposium
  • Speaking at a Northern District of New York Federal Court Bar Association CLE program at the Federal Courthouse in Albany on June 20
  • Speaking at the Intellectual Property Scholars Conference in August, held this year at DePaul University College of Law and co-sponsored and rotated amongst DePaul, Cardozo, Berkeley and Stanford law schools
  • Publishing “ Breaking the Internet - International Efforts to Play the Middle Against the Ends: A Way Forward,” forthcoming in the Georgetown Journal of International Law
  • Publishing “ One Piece of the Puzzle: A Private Right to Your Image in the Digital Age,” forthcoming in I/S: A Journal of Law and Policy for the Information Society
  • Participating in a panel at the AALS annual meeting that talks about the Internet "Kill Switch" next January

At Albany Law School, Professor Heverly teaches International and Comparative Intellectual Property, Cyberspace Law, Property, Torts and Entertainment Law.

Before joining the Albany Law faculty, Professor Heverly was most recently a visiting professor of law at Michigan State University College of Law. Previously, he was lecturer in law and director of the LL.M. Programme in Information, Technology and Intellectual Property at the Norwich Law School of the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, England, as well as a fellow with the Information Society Project at Yale Law School, where he retains an affiliation as a faculty fellow. From 1992 to 2001, he served as assistant director of Albany Law School's Government Law Center.
