President and Dean Penelope (Penny) Andrews traveled to Ireland last week for an international gathering of legal educators and practitioners, shortly after recent events in New York with Governor Andrew Cuomo '82 and Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman.

In Ireland, Dean Andrews participated in the "Leading Ideas in Law" seminar at the University College Dublin Sutherland School of Law on Nov. 29, 2013, meeting with administrators, law professors and attorneys from several countries to discuss the future of both legal education and practice. The title of her presentation is "Will the Institutional Structure and Culture of Law Schools be Able to Meet the Contemporary Challenges in Legal Education? Perspectives from New York." Other speakers addressed such topics as the globalization of law and access to justice.

Earlier last month, Dean Andrews spent time with New York’s Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, as well as all members of New York’s Court of Appeals, when he visited the law school to make introductory remarks at the 2013 Hugh R. Jones Lecture.

Dean Andrews also attended a conference in New York City for START-UP NY, Governor Cuomo's initiative to offer major incentives for companies and entrepreneurs to relocate, start up or significantly expand in New York state through affiliations with public and private universities, colleges and community colleges.

Shortly after returning from Ireland, on Dec. 14, Dean Andrews will receive the Excellence in Leadership Award from the Flora E. Kippins Foundation, a Latham, N.Y., based organization that provides resources and services to support and strengthen the development of children and families on the African continent and globally who are at risk of the devastating effects of poverty, HIV/AIDS and other opportunistic viruses.
