Dean Andrews Delivers Series of Talks on MLK, Human Rights

Albany Law School President and Dean Penelope (Penny) Andrews gave several speeches on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as on Nelson Mandela during the past several weeks. 

On Jan. 20, Dean Andrews delivered remarks at New York State’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Observance, held at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, N.Y. On Jan. 24, she spoke at the Deans Luncheon for the National Black Law Students Association Northeast Regional Convention, organized around the theme “Strengthening our Communities through Service.”

Dean Andrews spoke to a congregation in Schenectady, N.Y., on Jan. 19, highlighting similarities in the philosophies of Dr. King and Mandela. The Schenectady newspaper, The Daily Gazette, featured her talk with a photo on its front page.

On Jan. 24, she spoke to the congregation of the Gates of Heaven Synagogue in Schenectady on the remembrance of Martin Luther King’s birthday. On Feb. 28 she will be a panelist at New York Law School’s commemoration on the life of President Nelson Mandela.

On Feb. 3, Dean Andrews was recognized by The City of Albany’s Common Council at a Ceremony at City Hall as part of Black History Month, where the Council honors African-America residents of the City of Albany for their contributions to the city. On Feb. 15, she was be honored by the Flora Kippins Foundation for her work with African women.

On Feb. 26 Dean Andrews will speak at Bard College at Simon’s Rock for the WEB Du Bois Memorial Lecture.

Dean Andrews discussed Nelson Mandela’s legacy for several media outlets, including WAMC; NPR Boston; NPR Syracuse; the PBS NewsHour; channels 6, 9 and 13; and the Times Union.

She was also a panelist at the Nov. 29, 2013, conference, Leading Ideas In Law, hosted by the University College Dublin−Sutherland School of Law in Dublin, Ireland. Her
paper was titled "Will the Institutional Structure and Culture Of Law Schools Be Able To Meet The Contemporary Challenges In Legal Education? Perspectives From New York’s Capital."
