  • Biography

    Dr. Alexandra R. Harrington is the founder and Executive Director of the Center for Global Governance and Emerging Law, Research Director of the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law, and Vice-Chair of the Board of Women in Ethics and Compliance Global. She has served as Fulbright Canada Special Foundation Fellow at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in Waterloo, Canada and was the 2018 – 2019 the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Global Governance, based at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. She holds a doctoral degree in law from McGill University Faculty of Law.

    Dr. Harrington is the author of the book International Organizations and the Law (2018) and International Law and Global Governance: Treaty Regimes and Sustainable Development Goals Interpretation (2021). She serves as the Director of Studies for the International Law Association Colombian branch, a member of the International Law Association Committee on the Role of International Law in Sustainable Natural Resource Management for Development, and a member of the Climate Law and Governance Initiative’s Scientific Committee. She also guest lectures globally on topics related to international law, environmental law, global governance and sustainable development.

    Dr. Harrington has served as a consultant for entities such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Commission for Environmental Cooperation of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation, UNEP and IDLO. Dr. Harrington’s publications address a variety of fields relating to international law, including international organizations, governance issues, environmental law, legal issues relating to climate change, international child’s rights, natural resources regulation, international human rights law, international trade law, corporate social responsibility, and criminal law.

  • ​Professor Dr. Alexandra Harrington presented Intersections between Global Governance Regimes and Climate Change Law, presented on September 30, 2020 at the Current Challenges and Opportunities for Green Public Procurement: Global policy, US experiences and the new European Green Deal Webinar hosted by the George Washington University and the University of Silesia Faculty of Law.

  • ​Professor Dr. Alexandra Harrington presented Master Class in Climate Law, Governance and the Treaty Design, presented on September 26, 2020 at the online Climate Leadership Momentum and Ambition Climate Networking Conference hosted by the Green Economics Institute.

  • ​Professor Dr. Alexandra Harrington presented Implementing the Paris Agreement by Incentivizing Investment in Climate Adaptation and Resilience, presented on September 24, 2020 at the Incentivizing Investment in Climate Change Adaptation & Resilience in Ukraine: Legal & Institutional Contributions to Implementing the Paris Agreement online event hosted by the EBRD.

  • ​Professor Dr. Alexandra Harrington presented International laws and regulation of water security in the context of climate change, presented on September 21, 2020 at the Civil Servants School 2020: Climate Change training session for Central Asian civil servants, hosted by the German-Kazak University.

  • ​Professor Dr. Alexandra Harrington presented Water security and climate change law in Europe, presented at September 21, 2020 at the Civil Servants School 2020: Climate Change training session for Central Asian civil servants, hosted by the German-Kazak University.

  • ​Professor Dr. Alexandra Harrington presented Blue Growth and the SDGs in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea, presented September 7, 2020 at the Thessaloniki Sustainability Summit on "Sustainable Cities and Ports."

  • ​Professor Dr. Alexandra Harrington presented Re-thinking WTO DSB jurisdiction in light of pandemic, climate and other evolving threats, presented on July 17, 2020 at the Law Schools Global League, Summer Academic Online Conference on The 3R Initiative: Re-thinking, Re-packaging and Rescuing World Trade Law.

  • ​Professor Alexandra Harrington co-hosted a virtual symposium called "Human Right, Sustainable Development, & the Law: International Law" in April 2020.

  • ​Professors Donna Young and Alexandra Harrington participated on a panel after the screening of "The Uncondemned" at the University at Albany on April 1, 2019.
