Professor Hutter

The Schenectady County Bar Association presented its President's Award to Albany Law School Professor Michael J. Hutter on Thursday, May 16.

The SCBA recognized Professor Hutter for his work on New York's evidence guide—a consolidated reference tool, now available to practitioners—and for his generosity in providing CPLR and evidence updates to the association's members. Professor Hutter began working on the evidence guide in 2016, when he was appointed as reporter for the state's Judicial Advisory Committee on Evidence.

Professor Hutter is the fourth President's Award recipient in SCBA history.

Also honored at the SCBA Spring Awards Reception: Dennis Englert ’64 (Lifetime Achievement Award) and John Carson ’13 (Young Lawyer Award).

At Albany Law School, Professor Hutter teaches courses on evidence, antitrust trade practices, business torts, and federal jurisdiction and practice. Prior to joining the faculty, he clerked for New York State Court of Appeals Judge Matthew J. Jasen and practiced law with a New York law firm involved in antitrust and unfair competition litigation. A regular columnist for the New York Law Journal, he has authored a book and numerous articles on antitrust and unfair competition and served as editor of Model Jury Charges in Business Torts Cases.

An appellate specialist, Professor Hutter also serves as Special Counsel to Powers & Santola, LLP. He has argued more than 400 appeals in venues such as the New York State Court of Appeals, all four Departments of New York's Appellate Division, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Professor Hutter was one of seven nominees for the Court of Appeals, New York's highest court, in 1998. He was appointed to the Commission on Judicial Nomination in 2015. He earned his law degree from Boston College Law School and his undergraduate degree from Brown University.
