New Science & Technology Law Center Leader
Albany Law School President and Dean Thomas F. Guernsey has announced the appointment of Annette I. Kahler, Esq. to lead the Science & Technology Law Center at Albany Law School.
Kahler, a Capital Region native who has spent the past 20 years in northern Virginia, is an attorney who specializes in intellectual property, technology licensing, and commercial and government contracting. Ms. Kahler was formerly vice president, associate general counsel, and director of Intellectual Property for American Management Systems, Inc., and most recently CEO and general counsel of Ascella Technologies in Fairfax, Va.
"Annette Kahler has a strong record of leadership with a wonderful range of hi-tech experience," said Albany Law School Dean Guernsey. "This law school is committed to growing a Science & Technology Law Center that provides numerous levels of support for early-stage and established tech companies. Ms. Kahler brings the experience and entrepreneurial spirit needed to raise the Center to a higher level."
"The Capital Region has gained a strong reputation as an exciting tech center," said Kahler. "I feel fortunate to be part of this community and eager to transcend this program into a vital law Center for the tech community."
Kahler received a B.A. in economics and political science from the University of Rochester and a juris doctor degree from George Mason University School of Law.
Center Activity
Over the last two years, Albany Law School's Science & Technology Law Center staff has developed a curriculum in Technology Transfer which has been approved by the faculty and will be offered in the fall 2007. The Center has forged relationships with incubators, licensing executives, academia and high tech companies and business leaders throughout the region.
Albany Law School hosted last week a three-day international conference on copyright law in New York City, and plans are underway for a spring symposium sponsored by the Journal of Science & Technology on legal issues in nanoscience.
The Science and Technology Law Center at Albany Law School was established in 1998 to assist research institutions in New York in their efforts to commercialize their technology and the enormous size and diversity of the technology sector in New York. Conceived as a resource for the entire State, the Center serves the many private and public partners involved in building New York's high-technology base.
