Dean Ouellette Named Academic Dean
President & Dean Penelope (Penny) Andrews has announced that Alicia Ouellette will become the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Intellectual Life effective July 1, 2013. She will oversee all the major academic operations of the law school, including strengthening and direction of the curriculum; academic programs; compliance with the ABA, AALS and other regulatory agencies; and faculty assignments. She will continue to support faculty in their scholarship production, teaching strategies and service activities. She will also continue to oversee the student law journals and will be involved with student writing in a variety of contexts and for a range of purposes.
A leading scholar in the field of bioethics, Associate Dean Ouellette recently published the book Bioethics and Disability: Toward a Disability-Conscious Bioethics. She teaches a Bioethics Seminar, Constitutional Law, and Human Reproduction: Legal and Moral Issues. She is also a professor of bioethics at the Union Graduate College/Mt. Sinai School of Medicine Program in Bioethics. Dean Ouellette graduated from Albany Law School in 1994, where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Albany Law Review.
Dean Ouellette will replace Connie Mayer, who has stepped down from her administrative role after nearly 15 years. First as Associate Dean for Student Affairs and then as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dean Mayer has helped align the school’s teaching with the needs of a changing profession, overseeing curriculum enhancements over the years. She will return to teaching and stay integrally involved with continual efforts to develop an academic program that prepares students for law practice in the 21st century.
