Nina A. Kohn, a visiting professor of law at Yale Law School and the David M. Levy Professor of Law at Syracuse University College of Law, will deliver  a lecture titled Aging and Civil Rights as Albany Law School’s annual Nancy M. Sills ’76 Memorial Lecture virtually on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021 from 4 – 5 p.m.

Kohn’s research and teaching focuses on elder law and the civil rights of older adults and persons with diminished cognitive capacity. Her scholarly work addresses issues in family caregiving, supported and surrogate decision-making, financial exploitation of the elderly, vulnerability and discrimination in old age, the practical and constitutional implications of elder abuse legislation, and the potential for an elder rights movement.

The lecture is presented by the Elder Rights Pro Bono Project through the Justice Center at Albany Law School, the Government Law Center, and the Albany Government Law Review.

“We’re looking at aging from a civil rights perspective,” said Albany Law School Associate Professor of Law and Director of the Community Economic Development Clinic Ted De Barbieri. He is also the coordinator of the Pro Bono Project. “It’s important we provide more than just services, but information too.”

“There’s sometimes a stigma against older adults—a lot of them are not represented,” said Director of the Elder Law Pro Bono Project Mary Scouten ’21. Scouten helped organize the lecture and came to Albany Law School with a specific focus on elder law issues in mind.
