In the midst of ongoing disclosures about the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act of 2020, the Government Law Center at Albany Law School has released its latest explainer about how the program is structured.

The explainer is the latest in a series from the Government Law Center that concisely map out the law that applies to important questions of public policy. The Center has also created explainer documents on immigration and aging policy.

The explainer was written by Cheyenne Lufkin who is a 2020 Siena College Summer Legal Fellow at the Government Law Center under the guidance of the Center’s Director Ava Ayers and Legal Director Richard Rifkin.

The Paycheck Protection Program is the centerpiece of the federal government’s plan to rescue the American economy that has been devastated by shutdowns and uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, which helps smaller businesses stay open and keep Americans employed during the pandemic, has been both popular and controversial.

While the names of businesses that received loans and the amounts those businesses received were disclosed to the media recently from the Small Business Administration, the explainer focuses solely on how the program did and will continue to operate through August 8 which is the current deadline for applications for federal relief funds under the program.
