COVID-19: Community Updates and Resources
Albany Law School announced today a new suite of fully online programs for working professionals who are seeking to advance their careers in the fields of financial compliance and risk management.
The programs in Financial Compliance and Risk Management are offered in three tracks: as an LL.M. concentration for U.S. or international law school graduates; as a Master of Science (M.S.) in Legal Studies concentration; or as an advanced professional certificate.
Applications are being accepted for the first three cohorts, which have start dates of August 19, October 21, and January 13. The application deadline is July 29 for students who wish to enroll in August.
"Albany Law School has a long history of preparing leaders in the financial services sector," said Alicia Ouellette, President and Dean. "Our graduates have served in legal, risk and compliance, and business roles at a range of organizations and institutions, both nationally and internationally. These programs make full use of our standing and experience, allowing ambitious professionals to earn a credential that will enhance their careers."
"Skilled compliance professionals and risk managers play an essential role maintaining fair, orderly, and efficient financial markets," said Albany Law School Professor Christine Sgarlata Chung, Director of the Institute for Financial Market Regulation. "Trained professionals in this area—in the growing, evolving financial services industry—are in high demand."
Albany Law School designed the Financial Compliance and Risk Management programs for individuals looking to take on senior roles such as Chief Compliance Officer, Senior Risk Manager, and General Counsel, as well as high-ranking positions at financial regulatory offices.
Students will be taught by professors and practitioners—ranging from compliance officers to former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission officials—with unique expertise in finance. Professors include Joseph Suich, Chief Compliance Officer and Counsel at GE Power; Michael Delune, General Counsel, Enterprise Risk Manager, and Senior Vice President at Manufacturers Bank; and numerous other industry leaders.
"Albany Law School is uniquely situated to deliver a world-class Financial Compliance and Risk Management program," said Jason Fiske, Assistant Dean for Program Development and Distance Education. "As the only law school in New York's capital, we are able to leverage the vast array of opportunities and intellectual resources that the state has to offer in the financial services sector."
The master's degree (30 credits) or LL.M. degree (24 credits) can be completed in as little as one year. The certificate program consists of three courses (nine credits) and can be finished in one semester. Courses include Financial Crimes; Cybersecurity, Data Privacy, Technology, and Financial Markets; The Compliance Officer: Risk Management and Compliance Obligations; and Introduction to Bank Regulation.
With fully online curricula and six start dates throughout the academic year, the Financial Compliance and Risk Management degree tracks provide flexibility for candidates with work and family obligations; in 2018, Albany Law School's online master's program was ranked "Most Flexible" on the list of "Best Online Master's in Legal Studies Programs" by OnlineMasters.com.
Albany Law School gives a 50% tuition discount to alumni who enroll in master's, LL.M., or certificate programs, including Financial Compliance and Risk Management. In addition, all students—regardless of their alma mater—who enter as part of the first three Financial Compliance and Risk Management master's and LL.M. cohorts will receive a special scholarship, reducing tuition to under $25,000.
