Alicia Ouellette joined the law school faculty in 2001 after serving as an Assistant Solicitor General in then-Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's office. As an Assistant Solicitor General, Prof. Ouellette briefed and argued more than 100 appeals in federal and state appellate courts on issues ranging from termination of treatment for the terminally ill to the responsibility of gun manufacturers for injuries caused by handguns. Before that, Prof. Ouellette worked in private practice and served as a confidential law clerk to Judge Howard A. Levine, on the New York State Court of Appeals.

Prof. Ouellette's research interests include end-of-life decisionmaking, disability ethics, pediatric ethics, disparities in health care, confidentiality of medical information, human reproduction, women's health care, and ownership of the human body. She frequently presents on the conflict between disability activists and bioethicists, death and dying, public health, and reproductive rights. In 2005, Albany Law School awarded Prof. Ouellette its first annual Distinguished Educator for Excellence in Service award to recognize her work building the school's top flight health law and bioethics program and her work as lead counsel on the law professors' amicus curiae brief in support of the 44 same-sex couples who sought the right to marry in New York State.
