James Thuo Gathii is the Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship and the Governor George E. Pataki Professor of International Commercial Law at Albany Law School, in New York.  He teaches Public International Law, International Trade Law, International Human Rights, International Organizations, International Business Transactions, Comparative Constitutional Law and Business Organizations.

He is also a member of the Global Faculty of the Trade Policy Training Institute (TRAPCA) in Arusha, Tanzania. He is an independent expert on the Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations in Africa, of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. He is a founding member of the Third World Approaches to International Law network and currently the Co-Chair of the African Interest Group of the American Society of International Law. He is also a member of the International Law Association’s Study Committee on the Meaning of War.

His research and expertise is in the areas of public international law, international economic law including law and development, international trade law as well as on issues of good governance and legal reform as they relate to the third world and sub-Saharan Africa in particular. He has published over fifty articles and book chapters on international economic and trade law as well as on public international law and on good governance in Africa.

Professor Gathii’s latest book from Cambridge University Press is African Regional Trade Agreements as Legal Regimes (2011).  His previous book War, Commerce and International Law, (2010) was published by Oxford University Press. Professor Gathii received his LL.B. (Hons) from the University of Nairobi and his S.J.D. from Harvard Law School. He is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and writes a regular column in the Nairobi Law Monthly.

Before joining Albany Law School in 2001, Professor Gathii was an Assistant Professor at Rutgers Business School between 1998 and 2001. In the Fall of 2007, he was the Crowe and Dunlevy Visiting International Law Professor at the College of Law of the University of Oklahoma.
