More than 200 people gathered at Albany Law School to celebrate the career of Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus David D. Siegel on Tuesday, Nov. 18. After a series of remarks-often humorous, sometimes emotional, and mostly personal-by notable figures including Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye, Michael Garcia '89, U.S. Attorney, and Hon. Albert M. Rosenblatt, retired from the N.Y. Court of Appeals, Prof. Siegel made it clear he has no intention on slowing down his work. "I do love the law. I am not retiring. I just stopped commuting."
Overwhelmed by the event, Prof. Siegel chose to forgo his notes and express his appreciation directly to the packed Dean Alexander Moot Courtroom, filled mostly with his students from the past three decades.
Other speakers included E. Stewart Jones Jr. '66, Albany Law's Board of Trustees chairman; Connie Mayer, Acting President and Dean; Prof. Patricia Salkin; Prof. Patrick Connors; Michael E. Getnick, President-elect, N.Y. State Bar Association; and Prof. Siegel's daughters Sheela Clary and Rachel Siegel. All members of the N.Y. State Court of Appeals attended, along with numerous other dignitaries.
Professor Siegel, who joined the Albany Law School faculty in 1972, has taught and still writes extensively on civil procedure, federal jurisdiction and practice, conflict of laws, and New York practice. He is the author of New York Practice, the leading treatise on New York practice, and one of the few commentators appearing in the United States Code Annotated.
