In celebration of the competition's 25th anniversary, we are pleased to announce that Professor Elaine Chiu will be speaking to the competitors at the Thursday, Feb. 28, banquet, immediately following the preliminary rounds. Her discussion is entitled: "Atrocities at Home: Child Brides in the USA."

Professor Chiu is Professor of Law at St. John's University School of Law, where she specializes in the intersection of criminal and family law. She has written extensively about domestic violence, the criminalization of parental practices, including female genital cuttings, and the influence of culture and history in substantive criminal law. Prior to teaching at St. John's, Professor Chiu was a Research Fellow at Columbia University School of Law and a Climenko-Thayer Teaching Fellow at Harvard Law School. She also spent four and a half years as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan. Professor Chiu is a cum laude graduate of Cornell University and Columbia University School of Law, where she was a Senior Editor of the Columbia Law Review and a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Professor Chiu teaches Introduction to Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, Comparative Criminal Law and a seminar in Contemporary Criminal Justice. She taught in the St. John's summer abroad program in Paris in 2012 and will be teaching in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, this June as part of the Touro summer abroad programs. More information about Professor Chiu can be found on her faculty page.
