Charter Review

When Sullivan County assessed its charter and realized it was replete with ambiguous language and antiquated references, it became apparent that a full review was necessary.

The county was faced with a special challenge: how to revise its charter in a way that best met the needs of the public without compromising municipal law. The county attorney turned to the Government Law Center for assistance with this sensitive issue—and got results.

The GLC immediately formed a charter review team to address the concerns particular to Sullivan County. After a thorough examination, the GLC provided county officials with exhaustive legal information, a full range of related interpretations and solid non-partisan counsel. As a result, Sullivan County successfully enacted charter reform that satisfied all involved.

The GLC also provided technical assistance and support for charter reform for the city of Albany and for Albany County.
