Attorney General Litigation Bureau Practicum

This 5-credit class, consisting of a weekly seminar and an internship served in the Litigation Bureau of the New York Attorney General’s Office in Albany, will introduce students to litigation practice and to the wide variety of defensive litigation handled by the New York Attorney General. Applicants are required to have completed a Professional Responsibility Course, or be concurrently enrolled in one. Selected students will work 2-3 days a week in the Albany Litigation Bureau, a minimum of 12 hours per week.

Students will work with attorneys in different areas of civil defense litigation in State Supreme Court or Federal Court, including Article 78 litigation in State Supreme Court. Attorneys will assign students substantive legal work and provide students with ongoing oversight and guidance. Students will have the opportunity to attend court proceedings and to be involved in other parts of the litigation process, including researching issues, drafting documents, responding to discovery demands, meeting with witnesses and attending pre-trial depositions. Seminars will revolve around one of several subject areas of the Attorney General’s practice. The course will feature guest speakers from the Attorney General’s Office with expertise in various areas of law and from the legal community. Interwoven into the lecture will be a discussion of student experiences and professional and ethical issues.
