Andrew Cuomo '82 was sworn in as governor of New York state on Jan. 1.

Governor Cuomo joins other Albany Law graduates who have served as governor, including:

• Thomas Vilsack '75, former governor of Iowa and current U.S. secretary of agriculture
• J. Franklin Fort '72, former governor of New Jersey
• William Lord '66, former governor of Oregon
• Llewellyn Powers '61, former governor of Maine
• William McKinley 1867, former governor of Ohio and 25th president of the United States
• Redfield Proctor 1860, former governor of Vermont

A recent article in the New York Times details Governor Cuomo's previous time in Albany, including sharing an apartment as an Albany Law School student with his father, Mario Cuomo, who was then New York state's lieutenant governor.

Before Governor Andrew Cuomo was elected, he served as the state's attorney general, and he also served as secretary of housing and urban development (HUD) under President Bill Clinton. While at HUD, he brought 2,000 anti-discrimination cases and forced gun manufacturers to alter their marketing techniques.

Governor Cuomo founded the nonprofit Housing Enterprise for the Less Privileged (HELP) to address homelessness in New York state and nationwide before being appointed secretary of HUD.

Governor Cuomo graduated from Albany Law School in 1982, after graduating from Fordham University in 1979.
