Albany Law School gives three awards each year at commencement to recognize faculty for their outstanding contributions in scholarship, service and teaching.
Governor George E. Pataki Professor of International Commercial Law James Thuo Gathii received the Albany Law School 2010 Award for Excellence in Scholarship. Professor Gathii published a successful book this year, War, Commerce and International Law (Oxford University Press), and he has written articles on African trade agreements, issues around commercial law in specific African countries and Kenya's prosecuting of pirates.
Professor Christine Sgarlata Chung received the Albany Law School 2010 Award for Excellence in Service. Professor Chung is director of the law school's Securities Arbitration Clinic, where she works with students to represent investors in arbitration proceedings sponsored by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. As co-director of the Center for Financial Market Regulation, a joint program with the University at Albany, she also works to bridge the gap between academia and financial professionals.
Retiring Professor Norman T. Deutsch received the Albany Law School 2010 Distinguished Educator for Excellence in Teaching. Since joining the law school's faculty in 1978, Professor Deutsch has taught thousands of students in Constitutional Law and Contracts. He is also innovative in his classroom, including using electronic polling to motivate class participation.
More than 200 students received their law degrees at Albany Law's 159th Commencement Ceremony at 11 a.m. on May 14 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.
