Andrew Cuomo '82, a Democrat, defeated Republican Jeanine Pirro, a 1975 graduate of Albany Law School, in the race for New York State Attorney General. He's already busy to work, familiarizing himself with lawsuits that the state is pursuing and considering whom to appoint to his transition team. 

"He's cleared his schedule to focus exclusively on transition issues," Cuomo spokeswoman Wendy Katz told Newsday. "There's a lot to learn ... and he's really looking to speak with people, to create a transition committee."  

He formally takes control Jan. 1 when Eliot Spitzer is sworn in as governor.

More Albany Law School alumni also had success at the polls for the Nov. 7 mid-term election: 

• Democrat Kevin Cahill '80 ran unopposed in the 101st District and was assured a return to the state Assembly. He represents Ulster and Dutchess Counties.
• Democrat John L. Sampson '91 was re-elected to the New York State Senate. He represents the 19th Senatorial District encompassing Canarsie, East Flatbush, parts of Brownsville, Crown Heights, East New York, portions of Old Mill Basin, Spring Creek Towers, and parts of Midwood and Kensington.
• Republican Fred W. Thiele Jr. '79 was reelected to serve the 2 ^nd Assembly District, representing Suffolk County.
• Democrat Michele Titus '93 will hold onto her 31 ^st Assembly District. She represents the Queens, N.Y. communities of South Ozone Park, Springfield Gardens, Rosedale, Far Rockaway and Laurelton.
