Albany Law School will be closed today until 4pm due to the weather.
This year on Veterans Day, November 11, Albany Law School's students will serve local veterans and service members by organizing free one-on-one legal consultations at the law school's annual
Veterans Law Day.
At Veterans Law Day, veterans and their families receive legal information from volunteer attorneys. The event is open to all veterans seeking general legal help related to employment, family law and more. If you are a veteran with a legal issue and you would like to meet with a volunteer attorney for a free consultation, please contact 518-472-5858.
The day will feature a keynote speech at 9 a.m. by former Albany County Executive Michael Breslin, a West Point graduate and veteran of the U.S. Army. Breslin served three years in the 82nd Airborne Division, where he was platoon leader and infantry company commander, and later served a year in Vietnam where he was an infantry company commander in the 4th Infantry Division. He was honorably discharged in 1969 as a Major. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge.
Benjamin Pomerance ’13, deputy director of program development for the New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs, will deliver remarks at 12:30 p.m. Pomerance organized Albany Law’s first law clinic for veterans in 2012. Veterans Law Day will also include a community resource fair. A hot breakfast will be served, courtesy of the Student Alumni Veterans Association and Women’s Rugby Team, and lunch will be provided.
The student-led event, which has served hundreds of veterans in the past, is presented by the law school’s Pro Bono Program and Veterans’ Rights Project. This year's co-directors are Amanda Cole ’18 and Christopher Hall ’18.
The presenting sponsor of Veterans Law Day is BNY Mellon. Other contributors include Mack & Associates, PLLC. Pro bono consultations will be provided by attorneys from Tully Rinckey, Herzog Law Firm, O’Brien & Wood, New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs, and Cutler, Trainor, and Cutler.
