Albany Law School will be closed today until 4pm due to the weather.
Dear Members of the Albany Law Community,
The recent executive order banning citizens from seven majority-Muslim nations is the latest chapter in a tumultuous stream of events that have adversely affected members of our nation as well as members of the Albany Law School community.
Over the past few years, we have witnessed racial discrimination against members of our society that we are empowered to protect. We have watched states enact “bathroom laws” and discriminatorily legislate against the LGBT community. In the City of Albany, the Jewish Community Center very recently received two bomb threats in as many weeks. This is not what American idealism represents and it certainly does not reflect the values of the Albany Law School community.
Members of the Albany Law School undersigned student community stand with all people affected by these actions and are committed to promoting and maintaining intellectual, geographical, gender, and ethnic diversity. We are a welcoming community that continues to embrace the immeasurable benefits of diversity and inclusion.
To those members of the Albany Law community who are affected in some way by these recent events, always know that the student leadership finds value in your presence. If any members of our student body face religious discrimination, racism, sexism, or discrimination based on your sexual orientation and/or gender identity, we firmly stand behind you and condemn acts of prejudice.
We also understand that we are a community with a variety of perspectives and ideologies. We encourage dialogue with those members of our community who hold views different from those detailed in this statement and defend the right of all students to express themselves in a respectful manner. We are a strong community of scholars and advocates, and as such we encourage the free and respectful exchange of ideas. The Albany Law School community thrives on its diversity of traits as well as its diversity of opinions.
To all students: You are valued, you are respected, and you are cherished members of the Albany Law School community.
